Univ.-Prof. Dr. Manuel Schabus is a neuroscientist, psychologist, and psychotherapist at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience (CCNS), Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences, Department of Psychology, Paris Lodron University of Salzburg. He leads the Laboratory for Sleep, Cognition & Consciousness and holds the Chair of Consciousness and Cognition. His research bridges cognitive neuroscience, sleep science, and clinical application, with a strong translational focus on sleep health and digital interventions.
A major emphasis of his current work is on insomnia and digital therapy, particularly through sleep² — an evidence-based, digital CBT-I program that combines behavioral intervention with objective sleep monitoring. In parallel, he develops and validates AI-driven methods for sleep stage classification and sleep-related risk detection (including apnea screening) using signals derived from affordable consumer devices, aiming to bring robust physiological insight into real-world settings outside the laboratory.
Prof. Schabus has built an extensive scientific publication record with several thousand citations and an h-index above 60 (Google Scholar). His work appears in international, peer-reviewed journals and spans topics from sleep mechanisms and brain dynamics to clinically relevant applications in digital mental health and sleep medicine. He is also clinically trained as a psychotherapist and actively engages in public science communication on healthy sleep, stress, and wellbeing.
